In some ways the primary job of firefighters hasn’t changed much since Sept. 11. “Our biggest problems are still putting out fires and getting people to the hospital,” said one Washington-based battalion chief. But there’s been a fundamental shift in attitude among firefighters, police and sheriff officers and emergency medical personnel: There is the constant awareness that something bad, really bad, could happen here.
